How I made my dress for Valentine’s Day – a DIY video

Je vous retrouve aujourd’hui pour partager avec vous comme prévu, la vidéo de tout le processus de création de la robe que j’ai créée pour la Saint Valentin. J’espère que vous prendrez le temps de la regarder. Cette robe est fortement inspirée par Lirika Matoshia. Seulement je voulais quelque chose de différent : Une robe à la coupe assez simple avec un haut très cintré comme un corset mais avec des bretelles et une jupe très évasée. J’ai trouvé le tissu en tulle brodé sur Etsy. J’ai acheté 4 yards. Pour la doublure, j’ai choisi un satin polyester dans mon magasin de tissus habituel sur Bahreïn. J’ai pris 4 mètres de tissu pour la doublure. Pour réaliser le top je me suis aidé d’un patronage Burda : le patron de la combinaison 111 A du magazine Burda de Mai 2018. Mais j’y’ai effectué quelques modifications : J’ai ajouté une doublure et des baleines. C’était la première fois que j’utilisais des baleines et pour une première je suis plutôt satisfaite. Ça m’a permis d’avoir un haut cintré comme je le souhaitais. Pour la jupe j’ai fait un patronage ultra simple : De grands rectangles cousu ensemble que j’ai ensuite froncé. Je crois avoir environ 5 ou 6 mètres de tissu pour mon tour de jupe. Je vous laisse imaginer le temps que j’ai mis pour froncer chaque morceau et pour faire un ourlet mouchoir sur la doublure. J’aurais pu faire un patronage en cercles pour avoir une jupe à godets que j’aurais ensuite froncé seulement j’ai préféré faire une technique plus simple qui m’a permis de ne pas avoir de chutes. La prochaine fois peut-être que je réaliserais une jupe à godets. La jupe est toute doublée. J’ai cousu à la main mes finitions. J’aime avoir des finitions soignées comme ce que j’ai pu apprendre à l’école ou lors de mes expériences de stage pour avoir un rendu presque luxe même si je dois encore beaucoup m’amélioré.

As promise, I’m back today to share with you the video of the creative process of the dress I made for Valentine’s Day. I hope you’ll take the time to watch this video. The dress is inspired by Lirika Matoshia but this is quite different. I wanted a simple model of dress with a top fitted almost like a corset but with straps and a super flared skirt. I found the embroidered tulle on Etsy. I took 4 yards. For the lining I picked a red satin polyester in the fabrics shop I always go to in Bahrain. I took 4 meters of lining. To realize the top I used a Burda pattern : This is the pattern from the playsuit 111A of the May 2018 Burda magazine. But I alternate it a little bit by adding a lining and some boning. It was my first time to add some boning and I’m pretty happy how it turned out for a first. Thanks to the boning I was able to have something more fitted and princess like. To make the skirt I made a really simple pattern : big rectangles I sew together and then I gathered the top of them. I have around 5 or 6 meters of fabrics at my waist for each fabric. I let you imagine how long it took me to gather every layer and to sew the tiny hem of the lining. I could of made the pattern of a circle skirt but instead I made something easier that’s way I had less leftovers of fabrics. I lined the whole dress. I even made some hand stitches inside my dress to have great end finishings. I love when my clothes are as pretty in the inside and the outside. I always try to be attentive to the finishings just like I learnt in school and in my internship experiences to have something quite luxe even if I still have to improve my skills a lot.

  2. Ton chéri peut être fier de toi : tu es une couturière aux doigts de fée ! Quand est-ce que tu crées ta marque !? 😅 As-tu parfois des commandes de la part de ta famille ou de tes amies ? Perso je me sens incapable de faire ce que tu fais ! Gros bisous

    1. C’est tellement gentil.
      J’adorerais créer ma marque mais il me faut des clients potentiels. 🙂
      Oui j’ai déjà créée plusieurs choses pour ma famille. À Noël, je leur ai créée à chacun une pièce. Malheureusement je n’ai pas pu leur envoyer le colis. J’espère leur donner leur cadeau très bientôt.
      Et la mes parents veulent que je leur fasse un tablier quand je rentrerais les voir.

    So nice to see your processes behind your amazing dress! Personally the shape of this one is marvelous, I’d say one of the best from your blog.

    It is quite interesting to see that you made different pieces and then you put them all together, as if it was a puzzle and then you managed to assemble all by adjusting some details. I imagine it is a bit complicated but you managed to get a pretty nice result.

    *Loved the sketches, you’re really good at making fashion drawings for references of your creations, that helps a lot to enhance the vision of any project!

      Yes when the pieces are all cut, you can definitely compare it to a puzzle.

      Thanks you for the compliment of my sketches. I mostly make technic sketches than design ones to help me to define a model.
