Festivals to do in Sicily

Je suis heureuse de vous retrouver aujourd’hui pour un avant dernier article sur la Sicile. Je tenais vraiment à partager avec vous une partie des festivals auxquels vous pouvez participer en Sicile. C’est l’une des choses qu’on adorait faire en Sicile. En Corée du Sud on avait déjà l’habitude de ce genre d’évènements avec le festival des fleurs de cerisiers qui avait lieu à une rue de notre maison ou le grand festival de feux d’artifices qui avait lieu chaque année à Busan. Les plus beaux feux d’artifices ! Ici, en Sicile c’était plus modeste mais ça nous a bien occupé pendant nos weeks-ends. On adore participer à ce genre d’évènements peu importer l’endroit où l’on habite. Ça créée de chouettes souvenirs. Peut-être que cet article pourra vous être utile car ce n’était pas toujours évident de rechercher les informations sur internet. 

I’m happy to be back to day to share with you all the festivals we enjoyed in Sicily. We had so much fun to participate to all of theses events. We were already used to theses events in South Korea : We went to the cherry blossom festival which was located the street just near our house and the fireworks festival in Busan. I never saw fireworks as amazing as in South Korea. Here in Sicily it was not that huge than in South Korea but it was really fun. We really love to participate to theses kind of events no matter where we live. It makes our week end less bored when we don’t know what to do and it makes us a lot of great memories. I hope this article may be useful if you are looking for theses kind of events in Sicily. I know how hard it can be sometimes to get the informations on Internet. 

February

Carnavale de Acireale

Probablement l’un de mes meilleurs souvenirs en Sicile. On y est allés deux fois la première année et on y est retournés la seconde. Chaque année ce sont de nouveaux chars. Quand j’étais petite j’allais au carnaval de Nantes en France mais en Sicile c’est beaucoup plus grandiose. Le défilé est très très long et chaque char raconte une histoire et s’anime pendant environ 15 minutes. Parfois il y’a des surprises, un nouveau personnage en papier maché qui sort de la boîte. C’est incroyable ! Mais il faut être patient car l’attente entre chaque char est très longue. Ça dur toute la soirée. On arrivait souvent en avance et du coup on fatiguait avant de voir la fin sauf la seconde année où nous sommes arrivés en retard. Je dirais que c’est mieux d’arriver en avance pour être sûre de trouver une place de parking.

Probably one of my favorites in Sicily. We went there twice the first year and we had to come back the second year. Every year the floats are different ! I remember going to the carnaval in my home city in France but in Sicily it was an other level. The parade was really long and each float was telling a story. It was a real show. Sometimes a float had a lot of surprises, an unexpected character would of pop up or something like that.. It was really amazing ! But you need to be patient because it’s really long there was a lot of wait during each float and the show for each float was around 15 minutes long. But it was worth it ! The first year we arrived there too early so we get too tired to see the end and the second year we went there too late. I’ll say it’s better to get there early to find a parking spot. 

Carnavale di Misterbianco

Un autre carnaval complètement différent que nous avons découvert durant notre deuxième année en Sicile. Ici, c’était une parade avec pleins de gens déguisés de costumes incroyables. La parade est même retransmise à la télé. Par contre c’était encore une fois très très long  et je me rappelle avoir eu très froid même si c’était géniale ! Ce qu’on ne voit pas sur les photos c’est qu’ils avançaient au ralenti, mais vraiment au ralenti ! Je me rappelle avoir vu pleins de pauvres enfants qui pleuraient de fatigue en défilant, les pauvres choux ! Mais si vous êtes en Sicile à ce moment la, ne manquez pas cet évènement !

An other carnaval totally different we discovered during our second year in Sicily. There there was a lot of peoples marching with amazing costumes. You could also see the parade at the TV in Sicily or maybe even Italy. But like the other carnaval it was really long and really slow what you can’t tell in the pictures is the peoples were marching really slow. I remembered seeing a lot of kids crying while marching because they’re too tired. Poor little one. But if you’re in Sicily during this time of the year, don’t miss the carnaval ! 

Aprile 

Artichoke festival Ramacca

Peut-être l’une des meilleures découvertes de la Sicile. Un week-end on ne savait pas quoi faire et j’avais vu qu’il y’avait le festival de l’artichaut alors on s’est dit pourquoi pas. Et finalement on a adoré ! C’était tout simple mais on a adoré découvrir un menu local presque 100 % à base d’artichaut : Saucisses et steak haché d’artichaut, artichaut cuit au barbecue etc… Il y’avait pas grand choses à faire en journée car je pense que les évènements avaient plutôt lieu en soirée mais nous y sommes retournés la seconde année avec mes parents car c’est vraiment sympa de découvrir un menu local à base d’artichaut. En plus Ramacca est une ville toute mignonne et la seconde année ils ont construit un artichaut géant sur la place 😉 ! 

Maybe one of the best discoveries in Sicily. A week end we didn’t know what to do and I saw there was an artichoke festival so we decided why not and we loved the event ! It was really simple but it was really cool to try different dishes made of artichoke : sausages, burgers, grilled at the barbecue etc… There was not much to do during the day. I think the events mostly took places during the evening but it was really nice to try something different. We came back the second year with my family and it was just as fun. The second year they even built a huge artichoke on the main place. And Ramacca is such a cute city to visit.

Flower festival Noto

Le festival des fleurs à Noto est vraiment à ne pas louper. C’était trop joli. Par contre il y’a énormément de monde et il faut être patient pour pouvoir remonter l’allée des tableaux fabriqués de fleurs. Je regrette de n’avoir pas pu y’aller la seconde année. Chaque année le thème est different : le dernier tableau annonce le thème de l’année prochaine.

The flowers festival in Noto is a must to do if you’re in Sicily in May. It’s so pretty ! But there is a lot of peoples around you must be really patient to be able to up the alley with all the pictures made of flowers. I regret we only came once because every year the theme is different : The last picture announced the theme for the next year. 

Flower festival Acireale

Un autre festival de fleurs au même endroit ou a lieu le carnaval. Le principe est un peu le même que le carnaval sauf que les chars sont fait de fleurs. Par contre nous ne sommes pas restés en soirée pour les voir s’animer mais je suppose que le spectacle vaut le coup.

An other flowers festival which takes place at the same place as the carnaval. It’s similar as the carnaval except the floats are here made of flowers. We didn’t stay during the evening so I can’t tell how they move but I’m sure the show is worth it ! 

Street food fest Catania

Si vous êtes à Catane pendant le food festival ça peut-être très sympa. Par contre la aussi il y’a beaucoup de monde et l’année dernière on ne trouvait pas ça très bien organiser. Il faut tout d’abord faire la queue pour acheter une carte d’un certain montant pour ensuite pouvoir consommer dans les stands ( Et refaire la queue devant chaque stand ). Ce n’était vraiment pas pratique comme vous achetez un montant sans vraiment savoir combien vous allez dépenser dans les stands.. 

If you’re in Catania during a food festival it can be really nice. But last year the organisation was not good. There is a lot of peoples and you have to first go on line to buy a card of an amount of some euros you can then use for each stand and go on line again in front of the stand you want. It was really not a good organisation as you first buy the car without to really know how much you’re gonna spend in the stands..

Strawberry festival in Syracusa

Autre petit festival très sympa pour découvrir de nouvelles saveurs à base de fraise. Je crois que nous avions mangé une saucisse à base de fraise mais je me souviens ne pas être sûre car on a jamais sentit le goût de la fraise haha.

An other little festival really nice where we tried different things made of strawberry. I think we ate a sausage made with strawberry but I remember we were not really sure as we didn’t find a strawberry taste haha. 

June 

Sagra del Pesce Spada festival Acitrezza

Un autre petit festival où nous avions bien mangé. Pour quelques euros nous avions un morceau de pain, un verre de vin, de la salade et du bon poisson épée qui était la star de ce festival.

An other little festival where we ate well. For few euros we had a glass of wine, a piece of bread, salad and delicious sword fish which was the star of this festival. 

Granita festival

Je suis déçue d’avoir découvert ce festival seulement pendant notre deuxième et dernière année en Sicile car c’était un gros coup de coeur ce festival ! Nous avons testé une quinzaine de glaces granités à deux pendant toute l’après-midi ! Il fallait acheté des coupons et en tant que gourmands, nous voulions tester la majorité des glaces faites par des spécialistes dans ce domaine. J’en repense encore car j’ai goûté les meilleurs glaces de ma vie aux goûts incroyables. Je ne me rappelle plus des goûts en particulier mais il y’avait des mélanges auxquelles je n’aurais jamais pensé aimer en glaces. Je crois me souvenir d’une glace faite avec entre autre du céleri et c’était trop bon ! A la fin du week end il y’a je pense un vainqueur. On a voulu voter mais on a pas trouvé l’endroit ou voter haha. Je vous avais préparer une vidéo ou nous avions tester les 15 glaces mais je n’ai jamais eu le temps de vous la monter. Dites moi si la prochaine fois ça vous intéresserait de voir une vidéo dégustation de ce genre.

I’m disappointing because we found out this festival only during our second and last year in Sicily and it was a big crush for this festival ! We tried around 15 ice creams for 2 during the all afternoon and it was really amazing ! We paid 15 tickets to try 15 ice creams made by specialist and I still think about it. The tastes were so different and specials. I can’t remember all the mix we tried but I remember one made by celery and it was unexpected and amazing ! At the end of the week end there was a winner we wanted to vote but we never found out where we could vote. We recorded the moments when we were trying all the different ice creams but I never take the time to set up the video. Let me know if next time you would love to see a tasting video.

August 

Letojanni lantern festival

Je ne sais pas si ce festival de lanternes a lieu tous les ans mais c’était vraiment chouette. Il faut payer la lanterne et prévoir de quoi allumer la lanterne. Une dame m’a limite pris mon allume feu des mains et du coup j’ai raté ma lanterne et elle ait tombé dans l’eau. Mais au moins j’ai apprécié voir les autres lanternes s’envoler c’était très romantique ! La prochaine fois mon voeu peut-être se réalisera.

I don’t know if this lantern festival takes place every year but it was pretty cool. You have to pay the lantern and plan before with what you’re gonna switch on your lantern. Don’t do like this lady who took my firefighter from my hands and make me miss my lantern to fly right. It feel off in the water. The moment was still amazing tho to see all the lantern fly in the sky. Maybe next time my wish will come true. haha ! 

December

Chocolate festival Modica

Au mois de décembre le festival du chocolat peut être très sympa à faire à Modica. Il me reste encore pleins pleins de tablettes de chocolats qui viennent de cette ville.

In December the chocolate festival of Monica can be a fun thing to do. I still have a lot of chocolate bars from this city.

 

Christmas market Catania

Et pour finir à la période de Noël il y’a un tout petit marché de Noël. Rien à voir avec d’autres plus grandes villes d’Europe mais c’est toujours sympa pour se mettre dans l’ambiance de Noël.

And during Christmas time, Catania has a little Christmas market. Nothing compared to bigger European cities but it’s still nice to get a Christmas ambience. 

Bien sur il y’a également d’autres festivals auxquels nous n’avons pas participé en Sicile. Je sais qu’aux alentours de San Vito lo Capo il y’a le festival du couscous de la mer vers la fin de l’été, vers septembre et il y’a également beaucoup d’évènements religieux comme la fête de la Saint Agathe à Catane à laquelle nous n’avons pas participé. Il parait que ça vaut le détour mais ce genre d’évènements religieux ne nous intéressait pas. Je ne suis pas athée mais ça me dérange de penser que dans leurs superbes autels il y’a des restes de personnes.

Of course there is also a lot of other festivals in Sicily we didn’t go to. I know for example around San Vito lo Capo there is a sea food couscous one by the end of the summer, September or around. There is also a lot of religious events in Sicily but we didn’t participate to any. I’m not atheist but I’m not confortable with events where they parade with relics. I think it’s kinda weird haha
