Best memories of Sicily

Hi guys ! 

Aujourd’hui je voulais revenir avec vous sur mon expérience de deux ans en Sicile. Je suis arrivée en décembre 2016 en Sicile pour rejoindre mon fiancé. Ça me parait tellement loin quand on est arrivés en Sicile ! On venait juste de se fiancer et de quitter la Corée du sud. Et nous avons quitté la Sicile en février 2019 dernier. Il s’en ait passé des choses entre temps ! 

Today I wanted to share with you my 2 years experience in Sicily. In 2 years a lot of things happened. I arrived in December 2016 in Sicily and we were not even married back them. It seems so far away ! And we left Sicily last February. 

Avant de partager les photos de mes meilleures moments en Sicile, je voulais revenir sur mon expérience sicilienne comme ce que j’avais pu faire il y’a quelques années après avoir vécu un an en Corée du Sud. Forcément il y’avait moins de décalage culturelle avec la France qu’avec la France et Corée du sud néanmoins je n’ai pas forcément trouver la vie plus facile en Sicile :

J’ai beaucoup aimé notre maison qui était bien assez grande pour nous deux. On avait même un grand jardin mais je vous avouerais qu’on ne s’en ait pas beaucoup servit. Heureusement qu’on avait la clim car l’été, il faisait très chaud. J’avais du mal à supporter la chaleur. J’ai adoré partir explorer l’île qui possède d’adorables villages, de superbes lieux touristiques et d’autres endroits moins touristiques. J’adorais apprécier la vue de l’Etna de tout Catane. J’ai moins aimé me déplacer en Sicile. Hubby a une voiture de sport et ce n’est vraiment pas la voiture adéquate pour la Sicile. Si vous louez une voiture en Sicile prenez une petite voiture ! On a eu plusieurs expériences de devoir conduire dans des chemins vraiment chaotiques autant dire qu’hubby était stressé avec sa voiture. J’ai détesté la conduite des siciliens. Ce n’est pas pour offenser quiconque mais vraiment c’est un autre niveau, surtout en centre ville ! Il ne faut jamais manquer de vigilance. En Sicile, personne ne respecte le code la route : Pas de clignotant, pas de limitation de vitesse… Combien de fois on se regardait choqués avec mon mari car on voyait des bébés ou de tout petits enfants sur les genoux à l’avant sans voiture ou voir des familles complètes avec 1 ou 2 petits enfants sur des scooters. Nous avons également détesté les parkings. Autant on a jamais eu d’amendes alors que soyons honnêtes jamais on ne respectait la limitation de vitesse mais par contre des amendes pour mauvais stationnement on en a eu ! Les indications n’étaient jamais très clairs ( il fallait trouver un bureau de tabac s’il n’y avait pas de borne pour acheter son tickets de parking… ) alors au bout de 2 ou 3 amendes on a préféré les parkings payants surveillés. Et je vous parle même pas pour trouver facilement un endroit pour se garer ! Je vous recommande de télécharger l’application Easy parking si vous partez en Sicile. Ça nous a vraiment facilité la vie. Les transports en commun sont peu développés. Donc c’était pas évident pour moi sans voiture de me déplacer sans mon mari. Sinon, comme en Corée on a pas vraiment fait l’effort d’apprendre l’italien mis a part bonjour et merci pour être polis. Je vous avouerais que j’arrivais plutôt bien à déchiffrer l’italien. J’arrivais à traduire les menus après avoir compris que pomodoro voulait dire tomate etc.. ou sinon il y’avait google traduction ! Niveau nourriture comme vous le savez si vous me suivez depuis un moment, je n’étais pas fan de la nourriture italienne. Je n’ai pas trouvé les pizzas sensationnels. Je les préfère plus garnit avec une pâte plus fine. Et je trouvais que d’un restaurant à un autre, les menus étaient similaires. Par contre, on adorait manger du poisson dans les restaurants : Les grosses crevettes, les calamars, les poissons grillés.. J’en salive rien que d’y repenser ! Au niveau des supermarchés, je vous avouerais que j’étais forcément moins perdu qu’en Corée du sud mais il m’a fallu un moment avant de m’y retrouver. Les produits ne sont pas les même. Par contre c’était facile de trouver le rayon de pâtes, avec deux grands rayons complets. Mais ils avaient pas de coquillettes et j’adore les coquillettes haha ! 

Before to share with you the pictures of my best memories in Sicily I wanted to to talk about this all experience just like I did after spending one year in South Korea. Of course the difference was not as huge with Korea but there was still some differences :

I loved our house there. It was big for both of us. We even had a yard but we were too lazy to take good care of it. Fortunately we had AC inside the house because summer was really hot. I didn’t like the heat there. But I loved our time there when we went out to explore the island. There were too many beautiful places ! I really enjoyed the view of the Etna we could see from all Catania. I did’t like the drive in Sicily. Hubby has a sport car and his car was definitely not the good care to carry around the island. If you rent a car in Sicily just rent a small car ! We had a lot of not good experiences when we had to take really bad ways. My husband was all the time very stressful for his car. But after, we always had a good laugh haha. I hate Sicilian driving. It’s not to be bad but honestly they don’t drive good. It’s scary especially in the center. You must be really careful when you drive on the island. In Sicily it’s simple nobody respect the driving code : you don’t signal, you can drive as fast as you want.. How many times we were shocked seeing little kids on the knees of adults with no belt at the front or seeing an whole family with 2 adults and one or two little kids on a scooter. I was really scared for them ! We also hate the parking there. At the beginning we had a lot of tickets because we were too confused with the parkings. We had to find the tickets to pay the parking in a tabacchio if they didn’t have a machine near. So after 2 or 3 tickets we preferred park our car in safer parking where you have to pay at the gate. And I don’t talk about the struggle when we had to look for a parking. If you go to Sicily just download the application Easy parking. At the end, It made everything easier.They don’t have good public transport there. So I couldn’t really go anywhere without my husband and his car. I’m gonna be honest we didn’t make a lot of efforts to learn Italian just like in Korea. We just learned the basics, good morning and thank you. There is a lot of similar words in French so it was not so hard for me to understand their menu after I learnt few words. If I didn’t understand there was google to help us. 🙂 About the food like you may already know I was not a big fan of the Italian food. I thought the pizzas were not the best. I prefer when my pizzas have a thinner dough and more toppings. And from a restaurant to an other I thought the menu was always the same. But we loved fish restaurants with my husband. It makes me hungry to think about the delicious squid, big shrimps. grilled fishes etc… About the supermarket of course I was not as lost as I was in South Korea but it took me a while to look for what I wanted. Products are still different than French products. But It was easy to find the pastas departments. They had so many different pastas and brands haha.

2016 December 

Premières découvertes de Catane. Je me rappelle avoir tout de suite été séduite par les bâtiments rose que l’on trouvait partout.

Premier Noël tous les trois dans notre nouvelle maison.  J’étais contente je m’étais faite moi-même ma robe de réveillon. 

First Christmas   all three together in our new house. I was so happy because I was wearing a dress I made for myself for new year’s eve. 

Premières aventures siciliennes et surtout nous avons skié sur l’Etna ! C’était tellement incroyable comme expérience.

First Sicilian adventures and we skied on the Etna ! It was an amazing experience to ski on a volcano.

Ma famille venait me rendre visite en Sicile pour la première fois. L’occasion de découvrir les endroits touristiques de l’île. Je découvrais Noto, ma ville coup de coeur. 

My family came to visit us for the first time in Sicily. It was the occasion to discover more touristic places. I discovered Noto and It became my favorite city of the island.

De bons moments au soleil près de la mer

Amazing moments like theses near the sea. 

Probablement mon meilleur souvenir de Sicile : Voir l’Etna en éruption. On a eu de la chance d’avoir l’opportunité de faire une petite randonnée pour apercevoir sa jolie lave coulée.

Probably one of my favorite of Sicily : Look at the Etna in eruption. We had the chance to have the opportune to have a little to hike to look at the beautiful lava. It was amazing ! 

April

Premier festival de l’artichaut. Encore une fois on ne l’aura pas manqué l’année suivante.

First artichoke festival. We didn’t miss it the year after. 

D’autres membres de ma famille sont venu nous rendre visite. L’occasion de refaire des sites touristiques.

Others members of my family came to visit us. So we enjoyed other touristic places.

Mon amie est venue nous rendre visite et nous avons visité Modica et Ragusa : 2 villes adorables. 

My friend came to visit us and we discover Modica and Ragusa : 2 super cute towns. 

Voir notre jolie arbre en fleurs. Mais pour l’anecdote ce gros arbre est tombé peu de temps après !

Nous avions passé un petit week-end à une heure de Catane dans un charmant hotel avec piscine près de Noto où nous avons pu voir le magnifique festival des fleurs et nous avons découvert notre restaurant préféré que je vous repartagerais l’adresse dans un prochain article. Je regrette de n’y pas être allé une troisième fois.

We had a great little weekend near Noto in a nice hotel with swimming pool. We went to the pretty flowers festival and we discovered our favorite restaurant. I’ll share the address again with you in a next article. I regret we didn’t come there a third time. 

Nous avions passé un merveilleux week-end de 4 jours dans l’Ouest de la Sicile. Nous avons visité plusieurs parc archéologiques dont Selinunte, mon coup de coeur. Nous avons randonné dans la réserve naturelle de Zingaro un coup de coeur et nous avons été pour la première fois sur deux des îles Egades, un autre gros coup de coeur.

We had a wonderful 4 days week end in the west of the island. We visited few archeologic sites. My favorite was Selinunte. We hike in the Zingaro natural reserve and we went for the first time in 2 of the 3 Egadi islands. It was a big crush for theses islands !

Même si ce n’était pas en Sicile, on s’est mariés civilement !

2018 January 

Nous avions passé Noël avec ma famille en France. Et retour en Sicile avec la vue incroyable de l’Etna.

We spent a great Christmas with my family in France. And back to Sicily with the amazing view of the Etna we could see from pretty much anywhere in Catania.

February

La Saint Valentin. On ne rate jamais une occasion pour célébrer notre amour.

Valentine’s Day. We never miss an event to celebrate our love. 

March

Tout près de chez nous, nous avions une séance de cinéma par semaine en anglais. Donc quand un film nous plaisait on ne le manquait pas !

Near our place we had a cinema which had once a week a movie in original voice. So when we liked a movie we did our best to not miss it ! 

April

Nous avons repassé un chouette week end dans l’ouest de la Sicile. Nous avons visité les marches turcs d’Agrigento et nous sommes retournés sur les iles Egadi, notre coup de coeur. Et nous avons visité la troisième et dernière île qui nous restait.

We had an other great week end in the west of Sicily. We visite the Turkish steps of Agrigento and we went back to the Egadi island, our big crush. We visited the third island : Marretimo.

Mes parents sont revenu nous rendre visite. Nous avons visité ensemble des coins que je ne connaissais pas encore et avec ma maman nous sommes monté sur l’Etna.

My parents came back to visit us. We visited together other places we didn’t visit yet and with my mum we up on the Etna. 

June

Profiter de la mer, des glaces ! En parlant de glaces, nous avions participé au granita festival et nous avons mangé beaucoup beaucoup de gelato incroyables. Nous les avions tous goûté ! 

Enjoy the sea and the gelato ! Talking about gelato we participate to the granita festival and we ate a lot of amazing ice creams. We test them all !

Une autre amie est venue me rendre visite et nous avons visité pleins de nouvelles choses : de jolies réserves naturelles et l’Etna sur presque son sommet. On n’a passé de supers moments ensemble et avec hubby nous avons passé un week end tous les trois aux alentours de Caltagirone. 

An other friend came to visit me and we had a lot of fun visiting some natural reserves, the Etna and we had a great week end with hubby on Caltagirone.
